An Employment Opportunity

As you might guess from the site’s header, my name is Dave Mackey. I’ve been working in Information Technology in one form or another for the last eighteen years and a computer geek since childhood. Earlier this year I decided to pivot my career from the systems side of IT to software development.

I was IT Director for Liquid Church (a large, multi-campus church in Northern NJ) for the past several years and oversaw IT systems across six campuses. I could prattle on about this and other experiences, but I’ll leave that to my LinkedIn profile.

I am in the process of transitioning out of Liquid Church. I’m currently onboarding the new IT Director and working on some web development projects for Liquid. I’m looking for my next employer and wondering if it could be you? If the answer is yes, shoot me an email at dave @ davemackey.net. Thanks!

What I’m Looking For

There are a few core characteristics I’m looking for in my next job…

  • Remote work.(1)
  • Reasonable, livable wage.
  • Health insurance, PTO, sick time.
  • Positive Culture.
  • Work/Life Balance.(2)

There are other characteristics that are positive indicators for me but not essential.(3)

Footnotes

  1. For the right job opportunity I’d be willing to work on-site, and am open to relocation.
  2. I am a self-starter and a hard worker but I’m also looking to work to live, not live to work (as the saying goes).
  3. Additional perks that I find particularly attractive (in no particular order): flexible work schedule, equipment and/or education allowances, annual (or more frequently) full-team retreats, dental/vision insurance, 401(k) matching, life insurance, FSA/HSA, equity/stock options.

Why You Might Be Looking For Me

  • I’ve been coding since my pre-teen years and have no intention of stopping.(1)
  • I love (and am quite adept at) learning technologies / languages / systems. If I don’t know it I can learn it (quickly!).
  • I have diverse experience both inside of and outside of IT which allows me to provide helpful perspectives.
  • I work hard, am loyal, and have a passion for doing things well.
  • I’m good at helping/teaching others and asking for help.

Footnotes

  1. Starting with BASIC on the Commodore 64 and Apple II Series. Moving to Qbasic on Windows PCs, later to Visual Basic, VB.NET, C#, Python, PHP, and JS.

What Might Be Helpful To Know About How I Code

  • I believe in self-documenting code but I’m also a fan of documenting code (is there a term for that?).
  • I favor expressive code over code brevity. I want to understand what I wrote 10 mo.’s later.
  • I’m an advocate of using Google, StackOverflow, et al. in pursuit of answers to coding dilemmas but when I find an answer I want to understand it, not copy/paste.
